Agents have their own computers with Sandboxes GA

On April 13th, Cloudflare quietly moved one of its more technically interesting ideas from experimental to generally available: Sandboxes, a feature that gives AI agents their own isolated compute environments — essentially, their own computers. The concept has been building in the background of the agentic AI wave for months. Everyone working on autonomous agents eventually hits the same wall: the agent needs to *do* things, run code, browse pages, manipulate files, and doing those things in a shared or unprotected environment is either dangerous or impractical. Cloudflare's answer is to hand each agent a clean, containerised environment that lives and dies with the task. The GA announcement means this infrastructure is no longer a preview for the cautious — it is a production-grade offering.

If confirmed at the scale Cloudflare's GA designation implies, the implications run in two directions simultaneously. For vibe-coding and rapid agent development, this removes one of the most friction-heavy parts of building autonomous workflows — the security and isolation scaffolding that used to require serious engineering effort now ships as infrastructure. Someone with a good prompt and a weekend can deploy an agent that executes real code without worrying about it touching anything it shouldn't. The second-order effect is the more interesting one: as sandboxed execution becomes commodity infrastructure, the barrier to building genuinely capable agents drops, and the population of people building them expands dramatically. That changes the threat surface as much as it changes the opportunity surface. Security teams should note that "the agent has its own computer" also means the agent has its own attack vector.

Watch for other major infrastructure providers — AWS, Google Cloud, Fly.io — to announce comparable isolation primitives in the coming weeks, and for the first significant security incident involving a compromised sandboxed agent to test how well the boundaries actually hold.
