On April 8th, a developer published a piece on Dev.to describing an AI application that grants users superpowers — then systematically renders those superpowers pointless. The joke is the product. A day later, on April 9th, someone else shipped FoolPot: a hyper-judgmental AI teapot built with Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Cloud Run. It does not make tea. It evaluates you. Two projects, two days apart, both using real infrastructure to build things that are, by design, useless in the most earnest way possible.
If confirmed as a genuine trend rather than coincidence, here is what this means. Vibe coding — the practice of building software through feel, flow, and aesthetic intention rather than strict utility — has found its logical absurdist frontier. When the barrier to shipping drops low enough, developers stop asking "should I build this?" and start asking "what happens if I build exactly this stupid thing?" That shift matters. It signals that AI development tooling has crossed a threshold where experimentation costs less than restraint. Google's own infrastructure — AI Studio, Gemini, Cloud Run — is being used to make a teapot that judges you. That is not a misuse of the tools. That is the tools working exactly as intended, lowering the cost of a creative act until creativity becomes indistinguishable from play. The second-order effect is cultural: if absurdist projects are being built and shared publicly, they are also being studied, forked, and learned from. The joke teaches the craft.
Watch for whether similar projects begin clustering — more developers shipping intentionally useless AI experiments — or whether these two remain isolated curiosities that share only a calendar week and a sense of humor.
