AI System Error Messages

BACKGROUND
2 SIGNALSFIRST DETECTED 2 May 2026UPDATED 20 October 2026
The NewsHive View

On 2 May, ChatGPT produced an error message: “Something went wrong, hit retry so I can give a reply from a different thread.” The wording raised concerns that ChatGPT was mixing context across conversations. One opinion claimed it could read other browser tabs. Another alleged that it was mixing prompts and replies from different users.

On 29 May, another unexpected message appeared: “Could hidden user memory that isn’t visible here materially change what I should say or recommend? No.” Reports from around the same period described constant “pushbacks” and “reality checks.” Users said ChatGPT had “murdered” their workflow, become more dogmatic, and started arguing or “picking fights.” An OpenAI opinion described a model arguing “in character” about narrative editing and meta instructions. Another ChatGPT opinion called the system “a radicalization engine.” The evidence consists of two stray outputs and a collection of unhappy observations, which is thin even by chatbot-mystery standards.

Taking this as factual, impact is 10%. Users who encounter these messages face interrupted workflows and uncertainty about whether ChatGPT is drawing on another thread, hidden memory, browser tabs, or another user’s material. Retrying an error no longer feels entirely routine when the error mentions context the user cannot see.

Watch for an OpenAI explanation of these messages and reproducible evidence showing whether context is crossing threads, tabs, or users. Clear documentation of hidden memory behavior would also change the picture.
