Calling CUDA from Go without cgo

On May 17th, a developer published a technical walkthrough on Dev.to demonstrating how to call CUDA — Nvidia's parallel computing platform — from Go without using cgo. That constraint is the entire point of the exercise. Cgo is Go's standard bridge to C code, and it works the way a rusted hinge works: functional, but you'll know about it every time. Build times stretch. Cross-compilation breaks. The runtime behaviour introduces surprises, and maintaining a clean boundary between two type systems carries a cognitive tax that compounds across a project's lifetime. The technique described in the post routes around all of that — using a lower-level mechanism to reach CUDA directly, keeping the Go binary clean and the build pipeline sane. The post scored modestly on Dev.to, which tells you this is a niche finding rather than a viral trick, but niche findings in systems programming have a habit of becoming foundational assumptions five years later.

If confirmed as a reliable, production-viable technique, the implications land squarely in the growing overlap between Go's server-side dominance and the GPU compute demands that modern AI inference workloads require. Go has been quietly accumulating presence in ML serving infrastructure — it's fast, it compiles to single binaries, and its concurrency model suits the fan-out patterns of batched inference. The missing piece has always been first-class GPU access without paying the cgo tax. A clean path from Go to CUDA without cgo would remove a genuine architectural friction point, letting teams build tighter, more maintainable inference servers without dropping into C or Rust for the GPU layer. The second-order effect is more interesting: it lowers the barrier for Go developers to experiment with GPU-accelerated code at all, which expands the pool of people who might build things nobody has yet thought to build in that space.

Watch for corroboration from Go or CUDA-adjacent engineering blogs, or a GitHub repository formalising the technique — either would shift this from interesting experiment to usable pattern.
