[Academic] Need 100+ participants for my survey on GenAI use

BACKGROUND
1 SIGNALFIRST DETECTED 20 April 2026UPDATED 2 May 2026
The NewsHive View

On April 20th, someone identifying as an academic researcher dropped a recruitment post into Reddit's ArtificialIntelligence community. The ask was straightforward: participate in a survey about generative AI use, help push the response count past 100. It is the kind of post that appears in academic subreddits regularly enough that most users scroll past it without a second thought. What this one arrived without, however, was any of the scaffolding that legitimate academic research tends to wear in public — no institutional affiliation, no ethics board reference number, no named supervisor, no mention of a degree program, no target journal, no timeline. Just the ask, and a link. One signal has tracked it. Nothing has followed. The story has not moved.

If confirmed — meaning if this represents a genuine piece of academic research rather than a data-harvesting exercise dressed in scholarly language — what it reflects is something genuinely worth noticing. Researchers are increasingly turning to Reddit as a recruitment ground for AI-adjacent studies because the population there is self-selected in useful ways: people who have already formed opinions about generative AI, who use it regularly enough to have something to say. The problem is that Reddit recruitment without institutional transparency poisons the well for everyone who does it properly. Respondents have no way to assess informed consent, no way to know where their answers travel, and no recourse if the data ends up somewhere other than a dissertation. At scale, this erodes the informal trust that makes community-sourced academic research possible at all.

Watch for any follow-up post from the same account confirming the survey closed, sharing preliminary findings, or — most telling — providing the institutional credentials that were absent from the original call.
