Scaleway on Hugging Face Inference Providers 🔥

The thread begins in June, when Groq appeared on Hugging Face's Inference Providers list — an announcement that looked modest until you considered what it actually represented. Hugging Face was not simply adding a partner logo to a webpage. It was formalising an architecture: a single interface through which developers could route inference to third-party hardware without the usual ritual of separate API agreements, separate billing accounts, and separate documentation rabbit holes. Groq's inclusion signalled that the list was meant to grow. Then, in September, it did. Scaleway — the French cloud provider with a long-standing commitment to European digital sovereignty — joined the programme, extending the Inference Providers framework into territory that matters politically as much as technically. A developer in Berlin or Paris can now invoke a Hugging Face model and have it run on infrastructure that never crosses out of European jurisdiction. That is not a footnote. That is the point.

If confirmed, here is what this means. Hugging Face is quietly becoming the API layer that abstracts away the entire inference market — not by owning the compute, but by owning the relationship with the developer. Each new provider added to the list makes that abstraction more credible and the switching costs for leaving Hugging Face's ecosystem a little higher. For Scaleway specifically, the partnership is a distribution play: access to Hugging Face's enormous developer community without having to build the demand themselves. The second-order effect is geopolitical. As EU AI regulation tightens and data residency requirements become harder to ignore, a European provider sitting inside the dominant model hub is not a minor commercial arrangement — it is infrastructure for compliance. Other European cloud providers will be watching this closely, and the ones not on the list will start to feel the absence.

Watch for additional non-US providers joining the Inference Providers list in the coming months, which would confirm that Hugging Face is deliberately constructing geographic coverage rather than simply signing whoever comes knocking. Any announcements around billing integration or enterprise-tier residency guarantees would harden this from partnership into platform.
