Understanding Generative Model Collapse in LLMs

The NewsHive View

The idea of generative model collapse has been circling machine learning research for some time, but it landed in the vibe coding conversation through that Dev.to piece in late March. The concern is precise and, once you sit with it, quietly unsettling: when a model is trained on data that was itself generated by a model, the output distribution begins to narrow across successive generations. Diversity doesn't merely decline — it collapses. The generative space, which should be wide and somewhat unpredictable, folds inward like a dying star. Each training cycle inherits not just the knowledge of its predecessor but also its blind spots, its distortions, its subtle biases. Errors compound rather than cancel. The internet is already thick with AI-generated text, code, and commentary, which means any future model trained on a broad web scrape is almost certainly ingesting its own ancestors. In the vibe coding context, where developers are increasingly using LLMs to generate, review, and iterate on code with minimal human intervention, the recursive loop tightens further. The human editor — the source of corrective friction — is precisely the thing being optimised away.

If confirmed as a systemic risk rather than a theoretical concern, this matters in ways that are difficult to overstate. Developers building on top of LLM-generated codebases may find that successive AI-assisted iterations converge on a narrowing range of solutions — not wrong exactly, but progressively less imaginative, less diverse, more prone to shared failure modes. Security vulnerabilities could propagate invisibly across generations of model-assisted code, appearing in projects with no obvious common ancestor. At the infrastructure level, foundation model providers would face a fundamental tension: the efficiency gains of training on synthetic data conflict directly with the diversity requirements of a healthy generative distribution. Organisations relying on LLMs for creative or architectural decisions — not just autocomplete — would need to reconsider how much human-generated, human-curated data remains in the loop. The economics of vibe coding assume the model gets better over time. Model collapse is the scenario where it gets worse, slowly, in ways that are hard to measure until the damage is done.

Watch for empirical studies comparing output diversity across model generations trained on progressively synthetic datasets — that is the evidence that would move this from theoretical concern to confirmed risk. Any major lab publicly adjusting its data curation policy to exclude or limit synthetic training data would be an equally significant signal.
