AI Agent Architecture and Implementation

The NewsHive View

On March 21st, a developer published what they framed as a practical guide to building AI agents with tool use, with a subtitle — "patterns that actually work in production" — that stakes a specific claim. That phrase matters because the AI agent space is dense with theoretical frameworks and sparse with honest accounts of what actually holds up under load, at scale, with real users doing unpredictable things. The post scored a 7.6 on Dev.to, which is the kind of number that means a segment of working developers found it useful without it becoming the thing everyone was talking about. It didn't get picked up by Hacker News. The infrastructure crowd stayed quiet. And then, forty days later, a second post appeared: "Building an AI Agent Harness from Scratch: The Architecture Between LLM and Agent." Scored a 7.1. Same neighbourhood, slightly cooler reception, but the fact that someone is writing a follow-on piece — building out the conceptual scaffolding between model and agent — suggests this isn't one developer venting after a bad sprint. It looks more like someone working through a real architecture problem in public, one layer at a time. What we don't have yet is anyone else confirming that these patterns hold, or that this harness design solves problems others have encountered in the same way.

If confirmed — if these patterns genuinely work in production and the harness architecture is sound — the implications are quiet but significant. Most teams building on top of LLMs right now are improvising. They are reaching for whatever works, duct-taping tool calls together, and hoping the model behaves consistently enough that the seams don't show. A reproducible, battle-tested architecture for the layer between LLM and agent would give those teams something they currently lack: a shared vocabulary and a structural foundation they can argue about, adapt, and build on. The second-order effect is standardisation pressure — once a pattern gets enough traction, it starts showing up in internal engineering docs, then job descriptions, then frameworks. The developers who understood it early end up as the people others ask questions to. That's not a small thing in a field where seniority is still being invented in real time.

Watch for these posts getting referenced by developers outside Dev.to — a mention in a GitHub README, a conference talk citing the harness architecture, or a reply from someone at an AI infrastructure company saying they arrived at the same structure independently. That kind of corroboration would move this story fast.
