What's Actually Happening When AI "Enhances" a Video

On May 13th, a developer published something on Dev.to that the AI video enhancement industry would probably prefer you never read. The post asked a simple question — what actually happens when AI "enhances" a video — and then answered it with the kind of mechanical honesty that marketing copy works very hard to prevent. The argument is clean and, once you understand it, difficult to dismiss: when footage is compressed, or shot from distance, or captured at low resolution, the information that would make it sharp simply does not exist in the file. Compression is destructive. Distance collapses detail. There is no hidden signal waiting to be recovered, because physics does not work that way. What AI enhancement tools actually do is train a neural network on enormous datasets of low-resolution and high-resolution image pairs, then teach it to make statistically plausible guesses about what sharp detail would look like in that context. The model has never seen your footage before. It is pattern-matching against everything it was trained on and generating new pixels that look convincing. That is meaningfully different from restoration. It is closer to illustration.

The word "enhance" has been doing a lot of work it was never equipped to handle. Forensic television drama trained a generation to believe that zooming into blurry surveillance footage and hitting a button would reveal a face or a license plate with pristine clarity. That was fiction, and most technically literate people knew it. What is more interesting is that the AI industry quietly absorbed that fantasy and repackaged it as a feature. Tools that "restore" old photographs, "upscale" video to 4K, or "recover" detail from compressed files are not, in any meaningful sense, doing what those verbs imply. They are synthesising plausible-looking detail from learned probability distributions. The result can be beautiful. It can even be useful. But the enhanced pixels are not what was actually there.

---

If confirmed — and the underlying technical argument here is not really in dispute, it describes how these models work — the implications land differently depending on where you sit. For creative professionals using AI upscaling to make archival footage presentable, or to prepare low-resolution material for large-format display, the practical impact is limited. The results look good. That is often enough. But for anyone using AI-enhanced footage as evidentiary material, in legal contexts, in journalism, in forensic analysis, the gap between "synthesised plausible detail" and "recovered actual detail" is not a semantic quibble. It is the entire question. A face sharpened by a neural network is not the face that was there. It is the face the model thought was probably there, based on training data. That distinction, once clearly stated, should make AI-enhanced evidence deeply uncomfortable to any court or editorial standards body that takes accuracy seriously. The second-order effect is broader: as these tools become cheaper and more accessible, the volume of AI-generated visual "information" circulating as real footage will increase substantially. The challenge is not identifying deepfakes, which tend to be theatrical. It is identifying the quiet, pervasive, well-intentioned enhancement that quietly replaces what was captured with what seems likely.

Watch for forensic technology bodies or journalism standards organisations responding to the growing use of AI-enhanced footage in legal or editorial contexts — any formal guidance there would confirm that this technical critique has moved from developer commentary into institutional concern.
