AI Formal Math Verification

In late March, a research team posted FormalProofBench to ArXiv, asking a deceptively simple question: can large language models write graduate-level mathematics proofs that survive formal verification? Not proofs that look plausible to a human reader, which is the easy bar, but proofs that can be checked mechanically by systems like Lean or Coq — the kind of verification that leaves no room for hand-waving. The benchmark represented an attempt to stress-test AI mathematical reasoning at a level where errors cannot hide. Then, six weeks later in mid-May, a second paper arrived: Formal Conjectures, framing itself as an open and evolving benchmark specifically for verified discovery in mathematics — not just checking proofs, but evaluating whether models can generate new mathematical conjectures worth proving in the first place. The research conversation appears to be moving quickly from "can AI verify?" toward "can AI discover?"

If confirmed, here is what this means. The gap between AI that produces convincing mathematical text and AI that produces formally verifiable mathematical truth is where most of the hype around reasoning models quietly collapses — and these benchmarks are instruments designed to measure exactly that gap. If current models are failing at graduate-level formal proof-writing, it recalibrates expectations about AI's readiness for serious scientific work in any domain where rigorous logical structure matters. The conjecture-generation angle is the more consequential thread: a system that can propose novel, formally tractable mathematical conjectures would represent genuine epistemic contribution, not pattern-matched output. That changes how research institutions, defence bodies, and pharmaceutical companies think about AI as a collaborator rather than a search engine. The second-order effect is competitive pressure on foundation model labs to prioritise formal reasoning capabilities, which are expensive to train for and currently underweighted in mainstream benchmarks.

Watch for uptake of FormalProofBench and Formal Conjectures among the major AI labs — if OpenAI, DeepMind, or Anthropic cite or compete on these benchmarks, the academic signal becomes something more serious. A failure to engage would itself be informative.
