Ubisoft Ends Game Development at Studio Behind ‘Assassin’s Creed VR’

BACKGROUND
1 SIGNALFIRST DETECTED 21 March 2026UPDATED 11 April 2026
The NewsHive View

Ubisoft has reportedly shut down game development at the studio responsible for *Assassin's Creed Nexus VR*, the first full-length Assassin's Creed experience built natively for virtual reality headsets. The game launched on Meta Quest in late 2023 to reasonable reviews — a genuine attempt to transplant the franchise's parkour and stealth into an immersive format. Now, according to Road to VR, the studio behind it is no longer making games. The closure or repurposing appears to have been confirmed around March 20th, placing it inside Ubisoft's broader, ongoing restructuring — a company that has spent the last eighteen months cancelling projects, consolidating studios, and publicly wrestling with what it actually is anymore.

If confirmed, here is what this means. For VR gaming specifically, losing one of the few studios willing to build a AAA-adjacent experience natively for the format is a quiet but real setback. *Nexus* wasn't perfect, but it was evidence that a major publisher could commit resources to VR beyond a port or a tech demo. That evidence is now gone. For Ubisoft, the move fits the pattern: shed the experimental, protect the core. The second-order effect is chilling — other mid-size studios inside publishers watching this will read the signal clearly. VR projects carry risk, and right now risk is being aggressively pruned. The people who built *Nexus*, who learned how to design for presence and motion and three-dimensional space, scatter. That institutional knowledge doesn't easily reassemble.

Watch for any official Ubisoft statement on the studio's status, and for whether affected developers surface publicly — their next moves will tell you more about the health of the VR jobs market than any industry report.
