Is ChatGPT really THAT bad at math - or could I be clearer in my prompts?

The question has been alive as long as large language models have been in people's hands, but it keeps coming back because it keeps mattering. On March 22nd, someone in a ChatGPT community forum did something more interesting than simply complaining: they turned the frustration inward. The post doesn't just ask why ChatGPT fails at math — it asks whether the failure belongs to the model or to the person instructing it. That's a meaningful distinction, and the fact that it's being asked by an ordinary user rather than a researcher says something about how much more sophisticated everyday expectations have become. Most people have now spent enough time with these tools to suspect the relationship is more complicated than "AI bad at math." They've seen it get things right under certain conditions and catastrophically wrong under others. The variable, increasingly, looks like the prompt.

If confirmed — even loosely, even anecdotally — this reframes something important. The dominant public narrative around AI mathematical failure places the burden entirely on the model, which then places the burden of improvement entirely on the developers. But if prompt quality is a meaningful variable, the burden shifts partially to users, educators, and organisations deploying these tools without any training on how to use them well. That has second-order consequences: it means AI literacy isn't optional, it means the gap between sophisticated and unsophisticated users widens in ways that are measurable and consequential, and it means that blaming the model while writing lazy prompts is a little like blaming a calculator for operator error. The strategic implication for businesses is sharper still — if your team is getting bad outputs, the problem may live in your workflow, not in the model's weights.

Watch for any structured user study or controlled prompt-testing experiment that isolates prompt clarity as a variable in mathematical accuracy — that would either validate this intuition with evidence or reveal it as the comfortable self-blame of people who'd rather improve themselves than admit the tool has real limits.
