On 30 June, Search Engine Journal reported that Google had begun placing recipe links at the top of responses in AI Mode. The change gave source links a more prominent position in that type of result.
By 15 October, Google had expanded the approach. Search Engine Journal reported that inline links were appearing higher in more AI Search responses. The Verge said links would appear “higher up in responses more frequently” across AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Search Engine Journal also reported that Google was adding more links and more context around them. Search Engine Roundtable said Google had improved links within AI Mode and AI Overviews in five ways. It also reported that Google would not provide click data and identified recipes as an area receiving another link-placement improvement.
Assuming the reporting is factual, impact is 50%. Publishers, site owners and SEO teams may gain more visible citations inside Google’s generated answers. Users may encounter source links earlier in those responses. The lack of click data limits publishers’ ability to measure whether higher placement produces more visits. It is a familiar sort of generosity from a platform: better visibility, blurry receipts.
Watch how often higher links appear across AI Mode and AI Overviews, especially beyond recipe searches. Also watch whether Google continues withholding click data or gives publishers a clearer way to measure referrals from these placements.
