Adversarial Training Geometric Blindspots

BACKGROUND

On April 27th, a researcher posted a striking claim to r/ArtificialIntelligence: every supervised model ever trained carries a geometric blind spot baked into its architecture, and adversarial training — the very technique designed to harden models against attacks — actively makes that blind spot worse. The post scored an 8.0, high enough to catch attention. The following day, April 28th, what appears to be a follow-up or companion post refined the argument, scoring slightly higher at 8.2. This time the claim leaned into formal mathematics: standard empirical risk minimisation, ERM, the bedrock optimisation procedure underlying virtually all modern machine learning, provably guarantees the existence of this geometric vulnerability. And PGD — projected gradient descent, the standard adversarial training method — doesn't patch the hole. It deepens it. The posts describe specific mechanics, suggesting this isn't speculation but a constructed proof.

If confirmed, here is what this means. The adversarial robustness field has spent half a decade treating PGD-based training as a gold standard, a hard-won consensus that replacing clean training with adversarial examples genuinely improves resistance to attacks. If that consensus rests on a geometric illusion — if PGD is systematically enlarging a class of vulnerabilities while appearing to reduce others — then the safety guarantees being cited in deployed systems, from autonomous vehicles to medical imaging to content moderation, are weaker than assumed. The second-order effect is arguably worse: researchers building on adversarial training as a foundation may have constructed entire bodies of work on a compromised premise. Regulatory frameworks beginning to codify AI robustness standards would need to reckon with this. The people most affected first are not end users but the ML safety researchers who will need to reconstruct their assumptions, and the engineers who sold robustness properties to their organisations.

Watch for independent mathematicians or ML theorists engaging directly with the proof structure — either reproducing the result or identifying the flaw. A response from any of the established adversarial robustness research groups would shift this story considerably in either direction.
